Demi Moore tweets

Demi Moore posted the cryptic tweet “I see through you” on Monday in the wake of her husband’s alleged cheating scandal. As her younger hubbie Ashton Kutcher, 33, is accused of infidelity with 23-year-old blonde Sara Leal in San Diego Demi, 48, has been giving subtle hints to her feelings on Twitter. On Sept 23 she quoted a Greek philosopher with: “When we are offended at any man’s fault, turn to yourself and study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger.” She then tweeted “I see through you” on Sept 26 with a picture of herself with her eyes closed. No one from the Demi/Ashton camp has made an official statement as yet but Sara is reportedly trying to tout her story for $250,000 and hoping to get a payoff from Ashton’s team.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher: Is it a split in the Twitterverse?

Be The First To Comment

For years, Demi Moore has been desperate for the world to know how happily married she is, constantly tweeting an equal measure of cutesy honey-I'm-home posts and Hallmark-card platitudes. ("Work on loving yourself. Happiness is an inside job between you and your higher power, whatever that is for you!")

If you haven't heard by now that Moore is married to Ashton Kutcher (and that she still looks great in a bikini), you live on the International Space Station.

But here's the thing about parading your personal life in public: The public pays attention. And then, when things go wrong, or appear to go wrong, or even just slightly deviate in any way from the usual unicorn rainbow cloud of happy, the whole world knows at once.

In fact, Wednesday, we know this: All is not fabulous in the world of @aplusk. Or at least its not 100% lovetastic. For the TMI tweets have dwindled, the two reportedly have been spending time apart and a woman has emerged claiming she has had an affair with Kutcher. The woman is Sara Leal, and she says she slept with Kutcher something like 72 hours ago. Twitter age, you understand. We find out everything faster.

According to Radar, if Kutcher did indeed have an affair with this woman, it wouldn't be his first. Some reports indicate that Kutcher slept with another woman (named Brittney, of course), last year. Another fun fact: Leal is reportedly meeting with attorneys, presumably to see whether she needs to cash in, er, explore her legal rights.
Star magazine also seems to think that the A has sundered from the K; in an issue hitting stands this week, Star reports that the couple has been living apart and will split a $290-million fortune.

And what of Moore’s Twitter feed? Well, it's been largely dead for 24 hours, which is an eon in Mrs. Kutcherland; this is the same Moore who will point out the exact location of her teenage daughter’s breasts if it means garnering a little more attention.

Does this all add up to a real split?

I know where I’ll be watching for confirmation.

Guillen and Bartman

Be The First To Comment

What a dichotomy in Tuesday's Sports section. The first few pages are dominated by news regarding the departure of White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, a loud, abrasive, World Series-winning manager who is leaving the team and franchise that let him succeed beyond his wildest dreams in terms of fame and riches.
The back page is dominated by a story about Cubs fan Steve Bartman, a quiet, dignified individual who dispensed with offers for fame and riches after he was handed the blame for the Cubs not entering the World Series in nearly a century। The former is accused of throwing in the proverbial towel and abandoning players and fans to chase more money. The latter never uttered a disparaging word about his team and donated any money sent his way to help sick kids. Which one has the most integrity?

Sean Avery called homophobic slur?

Be The First To Comment
PHILADELPHIA -- A Winter Classic news conference Monday afternoon touted the Rangers-Flyers rivalry as one of the best in sports, but the animosity took an ugly turn during the Rangers' 5-3 loss to the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Monday night.
Feisty Rangers winger Sean Avery confirmed that Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds called him a homophobic slur during the first period of the bitter preseason contest. A video replay showed Simmonds hurling the epithet toward Avery while on the ice near the Flyers bench.
"To be here now having to answer the questions about what he did is disappointing for me. I'm disappointed for him," Avery said.
Rangers coach John Tortorella said: "I did not hear it, but I'm sure Sean Avery is not lying about it."
Simmonds, who is black, was on the other side of a racially offensive display last week when a fan hurled a banana into his path during the Flyers' exhibition game against the Red Wings on Thursday in London, Ontario.
The 23-year-old winger said he did not remember everything that was said between him and Avery during the game but did not deny crossing the line.
Simmonds said he felt Avery sucker-punched him in a scrum early in the first and said the two continued to verbally spar after that.
"Honestly, we were going back and forth for a while there," Simmonds said. "I don't recall everything that I did say to him but he said to me some things I didn't like and maybe I said some things that he didn't like. I can't recall every single word I said."
Avery felt he said nothing to prompt such a response.

Finding Antonio Gates’ Replacement on the Waiver Wire

Finding Antonio Gates’ Replacement on the Waiver Wire

Just like we did with our close-look at waiver wire options to replace Kenny Britt, we’re dissecting your league’s waiver wire for a potential tight end sub for Antonio Gates.

Gates missed last week with a bum foot and could be out for an extended period of time as he tries to get his constantly ailing foot near full health. Here’s a list of solid tight end options that are available in at least 51% of all standard Yahoo! leagues and could help your squad:

Jared Cook – Tennessee Titans (70%)

Cook has just five catches through the first three weeks, but with the loss of the aforementioned Kenny Britt, there’s a very good chance he sees a much bigger and more consistent role in the passing game moving forward. Cook is a big target with elite athleticism, so a few more targets his way could translate into fantasy success. His talent and potential is absolutely worth a flier if you’re a Gates owner.

Jermaine Gresham – Cincinnati Bengals (74%)

Gresham and rookie quarterback Andy Dalton displayed solid chemistry in Week One, couldn’t connect in Week Two, and appeared to get somewhat back on track last week. The Bengals take on a suspect Buffalo Bills pass defense this week, so there’s a chance Gresham and Dalton start clicking again.

Chris Cooley – Washington Redskins (75%)

Cooley struggled all off-season and through the first two weeks with a knee injury, but suddenly had four receptions for 40+ yards against the Dallas Cowboys last week. It’s also worth mentioning that the previously rising Fred Davis had just one catch. It could be a random happening in a Mike Shanahan offense, or it could be a sign of things to come. Monitor the situation.

Ed Dickson – Baltimore Ravens (84%)

Dickson may never be a full-blown elite tight end option, but he could help you through any given week due to his size and athleticism. Joe Flacco likes throwing to him (12 catches through three weeks), and their chemistry figures to only grow. He’s somewhat held back by the presence of Dennis Pitta, but there is potential here.

Benjamin Watson – Cleveland Browns (84%)

Watson was a solid TE1 last season and is slowly working his way to becoming that again. Unfortunately, Colt McCoy has struggled with his accuracy so far this season, and their chemistry has been slow to mature in 2011. However, McCoy and the Browns get a tough Tennessee Titans pass defense this week, which could cause McCoy to dump off to Watson more over the middle this week. He’s a proven performer, so he’s not a bad option to take a shot on this week and going forward.

James Casey – Houston Texans (94%)

Casey lined up at fullback, wide receiver, and tight end in Week Three, and ended Houston’s contest with the New Orleans Saints with an unlikely 126 yards and a touchdown off of five receptions. This could easily be a blip on the radar, but it could also be a major sign of Casey’s potential role with the team. He has great size, athleticism, and versatility, and it’d be shocking if the Texans didn’t put his talents to use more. He’s probably not ready to take over as your TE1 just yet, but he needs to be stashed in all leagues.
Randy McMichael – San Diego Chargers (98%)
Last, but certainly not least, who better to replace an ailing Gates with that the guy who will replace him in real life? McMichael isn’t the athletic phenom he was in his prime, but he’s still a solid tight end and is capable of putting up respectable numbers in the Chargers offense.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees include Joan Jett, Beastie Boys

Be The First To Comment

From a list of 15 nominees, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will accept five of the best musical acts to enter the Cleveland museum’s hallowed halls as honorees in October. This list contains some of the best 1980s acts, including Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, the Beastie Boys and the Cure.
The list inspires outrage and anger and angst among music fans every year, sparking heated battles over who did and didn’t make the list. “What a joke!! The Spinners? Chaka Khan? Donovan? THAT'S NOT ROCK N ROLL! This list is a joke,” writes one local Cleveland commenter.
Another oft-referred to point of anger is the absence of the band Rush. BlogPost reader Jamison wrote in to say, “Stopped paying attention to RR Hall after they have passed on this band so many times. Until Rush is put in, they have no legitimacy. Ask any musician from any band on your list.”

Amazon unveiling new tablet to challenge iPad today

Be The First To Comment
Amazon.com Inc. is expected to unveil Wednesday the latest -- and possibly biggest -- challenger to Apple Inc.'s dominant iPad tablet.

Few specifics are known about the tablet, and Amazon hasn't publicly acknowledged its existence, even in the invitation for an event to be held Wednesday. However, a tablet from the Seattle-based company is seen posing a threat to the iPad's dominance due to Amazon's strong media offerings, history of aggressive pricing and its ability to market the device on its popular website.

Among the features expected: touch-screen technology; a customized version of Google Inc.'s Android operating system; and access to Amazon's app store, streaming movies and TV shows. Some observers have speculated that the device could be priced below $300 -- a new iPad is $499 -- and could include Amazon Prime, the company's $79-per-year shipping and media service.

An Amazon spokeswoman didn't respond to a request for comment.

In a page lifted from Apple's playbook, Amazon distributed cryptic invitations -- containing nothing more than the company's name, an address, a date and time -- to a media event in New York. Reports that Amazon would launch a tablet to augment its popular Kindle e-reader have swirled for months.

Amazon already has established it can successfully market a piece of hardware. As Apple's iPad sets the bar for tablets, Amazon's Kindle is the de facto standard for dedicated e-readers. Citigroup has estimated the Kindle will contribute about 10% of Amazon's total revenue by next year, or more than $6 billion, even as the company lowers prices on the machine.

Andy Rooney, 92, leaves weekly ’60 Minutes’

Be The First To Comment
After 33 years on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” and more than half-a-century after he joined the network, 92-year-old Andy Rooney will cease his weekly commentaries this Sunday.
“There’s nobody like Andy and there never will be,” Jeff Fager, chairman of CBS News and executive producer of “60 Minutes” said in making the formal announcement. Rooney will not be replaced in his end-of-program gig.

But the news of Rooney’s departure broke on the TVNewser website, where in an interview earlier this year Rooney said he would keep working for “60 Minutes” until he “dropped dead.”
Rooney will make it formal at the end of his 1,097th essay of the program Sunday night.
He has irritated some — notably feminists — and served as fodder for one of Saturday Night Live’s most memorable parodies on the rival NBC network.
Rooney began his televised essays in July of 1978, alternating every other week with the “Point Counterpoint” confrontations between conservative editor James J. Kilpatrick and liberal pundit Shana Alexander. “Point-Counterpoint” was also subject to memorable SNL parody.
Rooney was a war correspondent in World War II, who flew on the first 8th Air Force bombing mission over occupied Europe. He joined CBS in 1949 as a writer for Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts

Christopher Plummer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jessica Chastain and Felicity Jones latest Hollywood Film Awards honorees – AWARDS ALLEY

Be The First To Comment
All About Glitters: Ever since Summit Entertainment screened Jonathan Levine’s moving comedy “50/50” ahead of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, I’ve been holding out hope that Joseph Gordon-Levitt could find his way into the Oscar race for his nuanced, heartfelt performance as a young man diagnosed with cancer.

The entire film brims with outstanding performances, from Seth Rogen playing to his strengths (for a valid reason) to Anjelica Huston in a feature-stealing role as Gordon-Levitt’s supportive mom. And while the Oscar landscape’s still establishing its contenders, Gordon-Levitt has picked up what I hope if the first of several awards still to come.

The 15th annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Film Awards, presented by Starz Entertainment and hosted by this Web site’s parent company, has chosen to honor Gordon-Levitt with its Hollywood Breakthrough Actor Award this year for his performance in “50/50.” He’ll accept the award during the annual ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on Oct. 24.

In addition, Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”) will receive this year’s Hollywood Supporting Actor Award, Jessica Chastain (“Coriolanus,” “The Debt,” “The Help,” “Take Shelter,” and “The Tree of Life”) will receive the Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award, and Felicity Jones (“Like Crazy”) has been named the recipient of this year’s New Hollywood Award.

The awards show has been ramping up announcements as it heads to its presentation. Other winners already announced include: The cast of “The Help” for the Hollywood Ensemble Award; Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski’s “Rango” for the Hollywood Animation Award; Oscar nominee Emmanuel Lubezki (“The Tree of Life”) for the Hollywood Cinematographer Award; Oscar winner Stephen Mirrione (“The Ides of March”) with the Hollywood Editor Award; Oscar nominee James Murakami (“J. Edgar”) for the Hollywood Production Designer Award; and Oscar winner Scott Farrar (“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”) for the Hollywood Visual Effects Award.

Sister Wives Recap: Premiere

Family Reaction To Another Pregnancy
The Brown family adjusts to life in Utah, some unexpected news and difficulties all around as the season premiere of Sister Wives kicked off on TLC.

When the Brown family first made their hectic move to Las Vegas, following an investigation for polygamy in their home state of Utah, they thought it would be a fresh start. Little did they know the troubles they would experience shortly after they made their arrival.

Kody Brown and his wives, Meri, Robyn, Christine and Janelle, as well as their combined 16 children, are finding life in Las Vegas difficult. Up until recently, the family (minus new spouse Robyn) all lived together in a large home in Utah, with connecting stairs and passageways to each family, who had their own apartment. If one of the wives needed their husband, he would certainly be around in a hurry.

Flash forward to life in Las Vegas, where everyone is in a different home and Kody spends his time traveling to and fro between all four wives and their children. It continues to make for a difficult transition, particularly for the children, who see less of their dad than ever before and have more time with just one mom. Prior to this, they had the luxury of spending time with their other "moms" because they were all sharing the same home.

Teenagers Aspen, Hunter and Maddie are having the roughest time with the transition, as they were used to life in Utah and are finding it hard to fit in at their new public schools.

Active in their former church (LDS), the Browns sought out religious counsel by attending a nearby Presbyterian Church and although they found the pastor kind enough, they were a house divided on if they should send their children there for extra-curricular activities. Robyn, in particular, seemed particluarly dismayed, as she felt they had worked so hard to live the life and religion they all shared, that it would be wrong to expose the kids to something new.

Christine transformed her barren backyard into a kiddie paradise, with a smaller pool for the children as well as a playhouse. Janelle hosted a party for the teenagers, who introduced their friends to their family and the Browns felt more secure that their children had picked nice kids to befriend.

But the biggest news of all was Robyn's pregnancy. She and Kody are having their first child and it was Meri's daughter who was most unhappy about the news, as Meri could never have any more children after her only daughter. Robyn stepped up like a good friend and comforted the teen and gave support to Meri, who was genuinely happy with the addition to their growing brood.

Yankee Fans Feel Sympathy, for Once, for Their Red Sox Brethren

Robert Caplin for The New York Times

Ricky Cavallo, left, a Yankee fan, with काitlin Hurley, a Red Sox fan, at Stan's Sports Bar at Yankee Stadium।

Something seemed very strange at Stan’s Sports Bar near Yankee Stadium, after the Yankees won the first game of their doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday: Fans of the two teams that constitute one of the oldest rivalries in baseball could be seen shaking hands, giving hugs, and even dancing together।

icky Cavallo, 42, of Plainville, Conn., a self-proclaimed “true blue” Yankee fan went as far as to buy a Stan’s souvenir shirt for a Red Sox fan, Caitlin Hurley, 29, of Manhattan.

Nearby, another Red Sox fan, Julia Clews, 24, also of Manhattan, danced to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” with a Samuel Adams in hand.

“I need this song right now,” she said, adding, “When they see the Red Sox hat, they offer you a drink.”

While it was not quite as momentous as, say, the Christmas truce that briefly interrupted the slaughter on the Western Front in 1914, the cordiality was certainly unusual. Yet the reason for it was relatively simple, and scant comfort to any proud citizen of Red Sox Nation — the team has been in free fall since Sept. 1, when Boston was 83-52 and seemed assured of a spot in the postseason.

Now, the Red Sox find themselves fighting with Tampa Bay for the final American League playoff spot, and even some Yankee fans acknowledge feeling sympathy; Red Sox Nation’s collapse has been so violent that the fun of rooting against them has been all but spoiled.

“I almost feel like they’re giving up already,” said Kalin Woode, 29, a nurse who lives in New Hampshire but is originally from the Bronx, where she developed an allegiance to the Yankees.

“Even though I’m cheering for the Yankees, on the inside I’m like, come on Red Sox. Pull it together. Give me a game to watch,” she added.

Ms. Woode also felt compelled to buy Ms. Hurley, also a nurse, a few drinks at Stan’s.

“I got her two Jameson shots and two Jäger bombs and a Corona,” she said. “And I wrote on her Facebook wall, ‘Sorry boo!’ I’m a very nice and cordial Yankee fan today.”

Even the Yankee brass got into the pity parade: After the first game of their series was rained out on Friday, the Yankees gave the Red Sox unusual input into the rescheduling of the game, drawing praise from Terry Francona, Boston’s manager. He recalled the Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, explicitly saying, "This game means more to you."

In the stadium Sunday night for the second game, Keith Scalia, 37, a Red Sox fan and landscaper from Old Saybrook, Conn., came braced for the worst.

“I’ve gotten into fights with Yankee fans before,” he said. “I’ve exchanged punches in the stands, but not tonight.”

He added that even some employees at the stadium were kinder than normal. “The waitresses at one of the restaurants were teasing us, saying ‘You have to drink more shots.’ ”

Bere Bertaut, 22, a construction worker from Southampton, N.Y., wearing an Ellsbury T-shirt, had a similar experience — up to a point.

“I haven’t gotten much hating,” he said in front of a concession stand. “Usually people yell at me to take my hat off, but I haven’t heard one thing.”

He spoke too soon. Suddenly, a Yankee fan walked directly over to him and started screaming into his face, gesticulating wildly.

“Stick a fork in it! You’re done! Go back to Boston,” shouted the aggressor, who then disappeared almost immediately. Caught off guard, Mr. Bertaut simply stared in shock.

“Whoa,” he said. “I guess it’s still Yankee Stadium, after all.”

Afterward, a member of the stadium staff came over and complimented Mr. Bertaut on keeping calm.

“He got kicked out,” the employee said. “You don’t do that in here.”

No one is saying that Boston’s recent ineptitude permanently altered the hatred that many Yankee fans have for the Red Sox; there is also the realization or fear that the Red Sox could somehow turn things around.

“I always go to the game thinking the same thing, it’s the Red Sox,” said Daniella Ghichi, 25, a banker from Brooklyn who has season tickets to the Yankees. “We still have that little bit of fear, even if we’re 100 runs ahead.”

“It’s never like, ‘Oh, we got this,’ because anything could happen in baseball,” she added.

Indeed, with three games left in the season, the good feelings may be as short-lived as the Christmas truce. Boston won the second game, 7-4, in 14 innings.

Lady Gaga Nominated for U.K. Award Celebrating Gays and Lesbians

Be The First To Comment
Lady Gaga continues to use her influence to help others. Because of that, a U.K. group has nominated her for an award that isn't about music.

American singer Lady Gaga has been nominated for another award, this one not having as much to do with her music as her commitment to creating a better world, in particular for lesbians and gays. The nomination, announced on Sept. 23, 2011, is for a Stonewall Award, sponsored by Stonewall, a U.K. lesbian and gay advocacy group.

Lady Gaga is nominated in the "Hero of the Year' award category for working toward improving the lives of those in the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered and queer (LGBTQ) community. The awards are open to anyone who has contributed to the fight for equality for that community and are inclusive of straight persons.

Lady Gaga: 'Hero of the Year'

This is the sixth year awards have been handed out by the group that began in 1989. They've grown and now have offices in England, Scotland and Wales and have been involved in many campaigns, including, as their websie says "helping achieve the equalisation of the age of consent, lifting the ban on lesbians and gay men serving in the military, securing legislation (and) allowing same-sex couples to adopt."

There are multiple categories including 'Entertainer of the Year', 'Broadcast of the Year,' 'Publication of the Year' and 'Writer of the Year.' Some of the others up for a Stonewall this year include actors Christopher Plummer, Jane Hazlegrove and Matt Smith; the journalist Ben Summerskill, chief executive of Stonewall, says the 2011 nominees are a varied group.

"This year’s Stonewall Award nominees include out gay sport stars, regional, national and sector publications, popular TV shows and popular LGB and straight entertainers," Summerskill said in a press release. "The diversity of those nominated for an award demonstrates how gay equality is embedding itself into 21st century British life. We think that’s a real cause for celebration."

Lady Gaga Fights Against Bullying

Over the past 2 plus years as she has climbed to massive fame, Lady Gaga has marched with the LGBTQ community and make political speeches advocating the rights of LGBTQ people. She has campaigned for the repeal of the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' (DADT) policy of the U.S. military and has appeared publicly with gay and lesbian members of the U.S. armed forces.

In her music she continues to write about and celebrate diversity and the rights of those in the LGBTQ community. Further, she works in other areas of social change including, along with other celebrities such as Canadian pop singer, Justin Bieber, the fight against bullying. The two causes meet as often those bullied are from the LGBTQ community.

The Stonewall Awards ceremony takes place in London on November 3; as of this writing there was no word on whether Lady Gaga will be in attendance.

Torrey Smith’s first three NFL receptions go for three RavensTDs (updated)

Baltimore Ravens rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith finally caught a pass in the NFL.

It went for a touchdown.

Then, he caught his second NFL pass.

It went for a TD.

And third? TD.

Smith opened the scoring with a 74-yard TD pass from Joe Flacco on the Ravens’ first possession against the Rams in St. Louis. His second TD covered 41 yards. His third went for 18.

Smith is the first rookie in NFL history and just the 12th player to score three touchdowns in a quarter.

He limped off after his fourth reception just before halftime, but returned in the second half and finished with five catches for 152 yards. Not a bad day for the second-round pick out of Maryland. All it took was a little patience and a break — Smith, the No. 3 receiver was playing opposite Anquan Boldin with Lee Evans hurt and inactive.

“I think if you go back,” Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome told the Baltimore Sun’s Mike Preston last week, “you’ll see that even Jerry Rice struggled in his first year.”

Rosh Hashanah Recipes: Noodle Kugel and Apple Crumble

Be The First To Comment

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on Wednesday September 28 and goes until sundown on Friday September 30. This is the year 5772 on the Jewish calendar, and every year Jewish families gather together to celebrate the occasion with traditional foods. Over the next two weeks I will be sharing with you the recipes for some of the most beloved dishes from my family. This week will be side dish and dessert; next week will be entrée and vegetable.

Mama Betty’s Noodle Kugel (serves 8 as a side dish)

Mama Betty is my paternal grandmother and was the very personification of the notion that food = love, in spite of this not being a sweet kugel. This is one of my absolute favorite foods!

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz. package of wide egg noodles, cooked al dente
  • ¼ lb. (one stick) butter, cut up into tablespoons
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 1 pt. sour cream
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 Tbsp. butter, cut into small pieces

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F
  2. Mix ¼ lb. butter with hot noodles.
  3. Add egg yolks, 3 Tbsp. sour cream, and salt.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Beat egg whites until they form stiff peaks and gently fold into noodle mixture.
  6. Grease 2 qt. dish and pour in noodle mixture.
  7. Spread with remaining sour cream.
  8. Dot with remaining butter.
  9. Bake for 1 hour at 400°. Kugel should be crispy on top and around edges.
  10. Cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Apple Crumble (serves 6 – 8)

Apples are a traditional food for Rosh Hashanah, particularly when served with honey. The apple reminds us of the fruitfulness of life, and the honey represents sweetness. Together, they represent the hope for a sweet year and a sweet life. This recipe uses brown sugar instead of honey, but the idea is the same.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup whole wheat flour (you can use all whole wheat or all-purpose if desired)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ pound (1 stick) cold butter (may use margarine to make this vegan or parve)
  • 6 – 7 (2 – 21/2 pounds total) Golden Delicious apples
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Lightly grease an 8- or 9-inch square baking dish.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together sugar, flours, salt and 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon. With your fingers, a fork or a pastry blender, blend in butter until it forms large clumps. Set crumble mixture aside.
  4. Using an apple corer (or a sharp knife if you don’t have a corer), remove apple cores and segment apples into thin slices.
  5. Put apple segments into a bowl large enough to move them around a bit and toss with remaining teaspoon of cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  6. Spread apple mixture in baking dish and top with crumble mixture.
  7. Put baking dish on a cookie sheet to avoid spill over onto oven floor.
  8. Bake for 50 – 60 minutes or until crumble is lightly browned and apples are tender. Let cool at least 30 minutes before serving.
  9. Top with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

The traditional Hebrew greeting for Rosh Hashanah is L’Shanah Tovah Tikatevu or “May you be inscribed (in the Book of Life) for a good year.” In Yiddish, we say Gut Yuntif or “Happy holiday.” Either way, I wish you and your families the happiest of New Years!

Diana Nyad Battles Jellyfish on Cuba to Fla. Swim

The 62-year-old swimmer faced stinging jellyfish, barracudas and a curious shark during her record swim attempt

  • So far the 62 year old has made it half way, despite being assaulted by stinging jellyfish.

Senior U.S. distance swimmer Diana Nyad swam through painful Portuguese Man O'War stings to make it half way to Florida.

Already Nyad has been swimming longer than during her last attempt to swim 103 miles of sea from Cuba to Florida. During that bid in August, shoulder pain, asthma and ocean swells forced her to abort her attempt after 29 hours.

Nyad began her journey at 6:04 pm Friday from the Ernest Hemingway International Nautical Club, just west of Havana.

It was the 62-year-old's third try to swim the course, after failed bids in 1978 and in August. As of the last update via the Internet, she had completed 49 miles of the 103-mile passage. If all goes well, she hopes to reach Florida's coast by Monday morning.

NEWS: Diana Nyad Forced to Abort Swim From Cuba

"Now I'm in better condition than I was in August, and I'm as prepared as ever... to achieve this dream," Nyad told reporters earlier in Spanish.

Earlier Saturday, handlers saw barracudas in the area, and she was also visited by a curious shark.

"Around 1pm -- and don't everybody get excited here -- an Oceanic white tipped shark was spotted near Diana in the midst of the three boat flotilla. ... Rob MacDonald, one of (her safety) divers, swam towards the shark, where they faced off within 10 feet of one another," said a post on Nyad's website.

"I guess he thought I was more aggressive than him, and he turned in the other direction," MacDonald was quoted as saying.

Nyad hopes to become the first person to swim the stretch of ocean without a shark cage.

Australian swimmer Susie Maroney, at 22, became the first person to swim from Cuba to the United States in 1997, though she used a shark cage.

Nyad said she was ready for the 60-plus hour ordeal.

"If I could swim to the half-way point dealing with asthma, I know today that I can complete it," she said, referring to her August attempt.

Nyad tried to swim across the shark-infested straights in 1978, but gave up after 42 hours in the water due to bad weather.

NEWS: Invisible Shark Shield Put to the Test

"This moment is about much more than sports for me," she said, expressing hope for better ties between communist Cuba and the United States, two former Cold War foes.

The swimmer set an open sea record by swimming from the Bahamas to the Florida Keys -- a journey that is the same distance as the Cuba-Florida swim, but a feat she described as much less dangerous.

And she clinched a record for circling the island of Manhattan at the age of 50, clocking in at seven hours and 57 minutes.

As in her previous journey, five yachts and four kayaks are accompanying her, along with a 45-person support team, including trained shark divers and electronic devices designed to repel the predators.
